Forever Player 2: A Nintendo Switch Unity Ceremony

One of my absolute favorite parts of working in weddings is when a couple truly makes the day (or even parts of the day) their own. Adding that special touch that takes tradition and makes it feel like yours is the whole point of a marriage.

So, when Amanda and Matt told me they were using a Nintendo Switch for their Unity Ceremony, I was over the moon.

Amanda and Matt have always been big gamers, but together they are a dynamic duo. They spend their date nights versing each other across multiple gaming platforms and universes. The only song request they had for their DJ on their big day was "Ma Meilleure Ennemie" from the game League of Legends meaning "My Best Enemy".

It only makes sense that their wedding ceremony itself had a theme of being each other's "Forever Player 2". Instead of a typical Unity candle, in which each spouse holds their own candle's flame to a shared, united candle, they displayed a Nintendo Switch body and each connected their small player remotes in their designated spot on either side of the switch itself.

As a part of A & M's deliverables, I threw together a mini video highlighting this special, silly moment for them to cherish forever. I used the song "Video Games" by Lana Del Rey, a popular wedding song for elegant, gothic wedding styles - a complete juxtaposition to A & M's colorful, whimsy wedding. The video blew up on TikTok overnight, gaining exposure in the gamer community as a possible new wedding trend, and gaining hate from non-gamers as a "weird thing for a wedding".

You know what they say; "Even bad publicity is good exposure". Less than 24 hours after the video was posted to TikTok, a representative from SWNS (a journalism company that sells work to highly read publications) reached out looking to chat with Amanda and Matt about the spark for the idea, and the content behind it.
